Seijin no Hi

One of the most colorful of the more recently established festivals is Coming of Age Day (seijin no hi), celebrated on January 15.

It has been declared one of the 13 national holiday. It is held in honor of all those who reached their twentieth birthday during the previous year. In the town of Ojiya, the young men and women light a candle to their village deity and sing a special folksong titled Kiyari Bushi in celebration of the day.

Throughout Japan, young people dress in their best clothes — many of them in traditional kimono, visit their neighbourhood shrines to make offerings for a successful adult life. In Tokyo, the new adults visit Meiji Shrine for this purpose.
