Location and Size of Japan

Japan is an island nation lying off the east coast of Asia. It has the general shape of a crescent and extends 3,000 km (1,860 miles) from tip to tip.

The country is made up of four main islands (Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu and Hokkaido) which together with approximately 7,000 smaller islands are collectively referred to as the Japanese Archipelago.

The nation capital, Tokyo, lies at 140° east longitude (on a line with New Guinea and central Australia) and 36° north latitude (about the same as Tehran, Malta, and the Strait of Gibraltar).

Japan’s land area of about 378,000 km2 is slightly larger than that of Malaysia, one twenty-fifth that of the United States, one twenty-third that of Brazil and one fifth that of Indonesia.
